Barbie Went Over John Carpenter’s Head but Thinks Margot Robbie Is ‘Fabulous’

Like a large portion of the US, John Carpenter has watched the Barbie movie, even though he admits he wasn’t the target audience.

”I Didn’t Know Who Allan Was”

In an interview with the L.A. Times to talk about his upcoming Suburban Screams series, Carpenter talked remote directing on the show, the possibility of doing another feature film, women’s basketball, and what he thought about The Exorcist: Believer.

Carpenter hadn’t seen that movie yet, but was quick to mention how much he loved what director David Gordon Green did with Halloween Kills. He did have some thoughts on another 2023 movie. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Not that he’s all that sure why he watched it to begin with.

”I watched Barbie. I can’t believe I watched Barbie. It’s just not my generation. I had nothing to do with Barbie dolls. I didn’t know who Allan was, ”he said, ”I mean, I can sum it up. She says, ‘I don’t have a vagina’ and then at the end, ‘I’m going to go to a gynecologist!’ That’s the movie to me. I mean, there’s a patriarchy business in there, but I missed that whole thing. Right over my head.”

There was one highlight at least for Carpenter, ”But I think she’s fabulous, Margot Robbie.”

John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams tells real-life stories of horrifying events in small-town America and blends them with dramatic recreations. It starts streaming on Peacock on October 13, 2023, and Carpenter returns to the director’s chair for the show’s sixth episode.
