The Color Purple Trailer Teases New Look at Beloved Classic

Warner Bros. Pictures released a new trailer for The Color Purple, the musical film adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel. The Color Purple arrives in theaters on December 25, 2023.

“Nothing is stronger than sisterhood” in the new look at the beloved classic. The new footage highlights Celie (Fantasia Barrino) and her struggles as an African American woman living in the South during the early 1900s. The trailer also depicts the relationship between a young Celie (Phylicia Pearl Mpasi) and her sister Nettie (Halle Bailey), whom Celie has not seen in years.

What to Expect in The Color Purple?

The Color Purple’s cast includes Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Danielle Brooks as Sofia, Colman Domingo as Albert “Mister” Johnson, Corey Hawkins as Harpo Johnson, H.E.R. as Squeak/Mary Agnes, Ciara as Nettie Harris, Halle Bailey as a young Nettie, Aunjanue Ellis as Mama, Louis Gossett Jr. as Ol’ Mister Johnson, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi as young Celie, and Fantasia Barrino as Celie Harris-Johnson in her film debut.

The film’s synopsis reads: “A musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel about the life-long struggles of an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s.”

The Color Purple is directed by Blitz Bazawule from a screenplay by Marcus Gardley. Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones are producers. Spielberg directed the 1985 feature film adaptation of The Color Purple, with Winfrey starring as Sofia and Jones serving as a producer. The 2023 film is based on the Tony Award-winning stage musical of the same name.
