Emma Stone Wants to Make a Feature-Length Silent Movie: ‘It’s My Favorite Thing to Not Have to Speak’

Emma Stone wants to make a feature-length silent film when the actors strike is over.

Per Variety, Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos stopped by the New York Film Festival for the premiere of Bleat, a 30-minute silent short film directed by Lanthimos that stars Stone and Damien Bonnard.

Given that Bleat has secured an interim agreement with The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) during the actors strike, Stone was able to talk about the short and revealed she now wants to make a full-length feature film.

“If I never had to talk again, I’d be thrilled,” she said. “And so would a lot of other people.”

She later added, “I’m being serious. It’s my favorite thing to not have to speak. I often think we could cut many lines of dialogue because I think people can say a lot more without speaking.”

When Lanthimos suggested making a silent feature, Stone told the audience to applaud if they approve of the idea. “I’ll do it…once the strike is over,” she concluded after her comment was met with enthusiasm.

Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have worked together before Bleat

Lanthimos and Stone first collaborated on 2018’s The Favourite, a period piece that also starred Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, and Nicholas Hoult.

The two reunited for Poor Things, a Frankenstein-like story set to release in the United States on December 8, 2023. Poor Things also stars Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, Jerrod Carmichael, Margaret Qualley, and Kathryn Hunter.

“From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Dafoe),” the official synopsis reads. “Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.”
