Kraven the Hunter Set as Sony’s First R-Rated Marvel Movie

During a recent appearance at the Las Vegas CinemaCon, Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson confirmed that Sony Pictures’ highly-anticipated film adaptation of Kraven the Hunter would officially be the studio’s first R-rated Marvel movie. He also debuted the first exclusive footage, providing attendees with a first look at the superhero movie. According to Variety, the video featured a blood-soaked Kraven as he mercilessly kills his victims with claw-shaped weapons and his teeth.

Kraven the Hunter will feature Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Avengers: Age of Ultron) as he takes on the mantle of the titular Spider-Man villain, who is a Russian immigrant named Sergei Kravinoff. In the film, which is being billed as the next chapter of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), he goes on a mission to prove that he is the greatest hunter in the world.

Joining Taylor-Johnson in Sony’s R-rated Marvel movie is Fred Hechinger (Fear Street Trilogy, The White Lotus) as Chameleon, Kraven’s half-brother; Oscar nominee Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) as Calypso, the occasion partner and lover of Kraven; Russell Crowe and Levi Miller in undisclosed roles. Christopher Abbott and Alessandro Nivola have also been tapped as the main villains.

Kraven the Hunter is directed by Oscar nominee J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year) from a screenplay co-written by Richard Wenk (The Equalizer films), Matt Holloway, and Art Marcum. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing the project.

The R-rated Marvel movie is currently slated for an October 6, 2023, theatrical release.
