James Gunn on the Guardians’ Ship, Doom Patrol, & The Dark Knight Returns

In a number of posts and replies across Twitter and Mastodon, DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn revealed a bevy of details about Marvel, DC, and the comics he’s been reading.

When asked about if he has seen and liked HBO Max’s Doom Patrol series, Gunn replied with a quick “Yes.” Similarly, Gunn confirmed that he has read Frank Miller’s seminal Batman story The Dark Knight Returns.

The DC Studios Co-CEO then gave praise to acclaimed comic writer Tom King. When a fan asked if he enjoyed King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, he stated he enjoyed it “So, so, so much,” and that he feels Tom King “is just the greatest.”

Just before the New Year, fans started to speculate about whether the books on the table in the tweet below were hints about the future of the DC Universe, as they’re omnibuses of Grant Morrison’s Batman run. Gunn set the record straight, confirming that their placement wasn’t any kind of hint, though he admitted that “Grant’s Batman & Robin (& their Superman) are some of my favorites.”

One fan showed Gunn praise that Grant Morrison had given to the Co-CEO’s John Cena-led Peacemaker series, which Gunn appreciated, saying, “I hadn’t seen that.”

When asked about if fans would learn about what happened to the Benatar, the ship used by the Guardians of the Galaxy after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn answered, “It’s more simple than that – Rocket just keeps upgrading ships.”

In a thread with the director, one Twitter user stated that Disney must have influenced Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The director once again clarified that studios only interfere if they don’t like a movie and confirmed that his works have never been interfered with, stating, “I’ve never been forced into a change on any of my movies, including the Guardians films.”

Gunn also debunked a rumor that said Warner Bros. Discovery would be hosting an event on January 6 to make announcements about upcoming projects. When asked if this was true, he simply replied, “It is not.”

The next DCU release will be Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which releases on March 17, 2023. It will be followed by The Flash, starring the troubled Ezra Miller, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
