five night at freddy's theatrical release

Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie Has Found Its Director

It has been five years since Blumhouse acquired the rights to the film adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s and things are finally moving forward with the long-in-development project. Blumhouse has officially announced that Emma Tammi has been tapped to direct the upcoming live-action horror thriller, which is currently slated for an early 2023 production start.

Tammi is no stranger to the horror genre as she previously worked on the 2018 independent Western horror film The Wind, which served as her feature directorial debut. She also directed two episodes of Hulu’s horror anthology Into the Dark.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is more consistently asked about than any other film I’ve ever worked on, and I’m thrilled to confirm it’s finally happening!” Blumhouse head Jason Blum said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “With Emma Tammi at the helm, we’re committed to making Scott’s vision of the movie come to life. Rest assured, it will be and is worth the wait.”

The live-action film will be based on the popular horror video game created by Scott Cawthon, who is co-writing the screenplay with Tammi and Seth Cuddeback. The project is currently in its pre-production stage, with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop also working with Blumhouse to bring the horrifying animatronics to life.

The original Five Nights at Freddy’s game challenges players to survive for five nights as a security guard in a demented pizza entertainment restaurant where homicidal, possessed animatronics roam the halls in search of their next victims.

The Five Nights at Freddy’s movie will be produced by Cawthon and Blum, with Russell Binder serving as an executive producer. Before Tammi stepped up to the director’s chair, Home Alone director Chris Columbus was previously attached to helm the project.
