Could Some of the Key Avengers Sit Out Avengers 3?

Since we’re at least three years away from the release of an “Avengers 3,” go ahead and take this one with a heaping grain of salt and remember it’s all just rumors at this point. Ten days ago, a rumor popped up that Marvel’s Avengers 3 was going to be so big it would have to be split into two films, ala The Hunger Games: Mockingjay or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Badass Digest, however, was quick to point out that this was impossible due to the very tight contracts Marvel has with its actors.

Now, BAD is back with an interesting tidbit on this scenario which they say is closer to the truth than originally thought. The site reports that Avengers 3 won’t be “split” into two movies so much as it will serve as a sort of springboard into something else, something bigger, and whatever that something else is could keep some of Marvel’s biggest players out of Avengers 3.

As the site notes, Robert Downey Jr.’s new contract with Marvel stipulates his appearance in both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers 3, so he’ll be present for this third outing, but the likes of Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, and The Hulk could all be benched for the third film while the studio waits to use them in this “something else.”

The site speculates that the scenario Marvel Studios could be planning is an Avengers 3 filled with Iron Man and other secondary characters, such as the new additions in Phase Three, followed by an “all-franchise crossover” that brings all the Marvel characters from the films and television together into one place.

It’s a lot to take in, and keep in mind some portions of this are rumors while others are speculation. Sound off with your thoughts below and check back for more details on this story as we learn them.

Avengers: Age of Ultron will debut in theaters May 1, 2015, while Avengers 3 is currently without a release date.
