Hulu Schedule Additions: New TV & Movies Arriving July 4-10

July has arrived, and it brings some investigative journalism drama to Hulu.

On July 8, Hulu subscribers will finally be able to watch Minamata. Andrew Levitas’ movie stars Johnny Depp as Eugene Smith, the well-known photojournalist. Based on the book of the same name by Aileen Mioko Smith and W. Eugene Smith, the film debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2020. Minamata had a complicated release story, but now it is available to the North American audience.

“Inspired by a true story, Minamata stars Johnny Depp playing celebrated photojournalist Eugene Smith. The film takes place in 1971 when we find Smith as a recluse and disconnected from the world he once shot,” says the synopsis. “After receiving one final assignment from Life Magazine editor Robert Hayes (Bill Nighy), Eugene must travel to the Japanese coastal city of Minamata, which has been ravaged by mercury poisoning. Ushered by an impassioned Japanese translator, Aileen (Minami) and encouraged by local villagers (Hiroyuki Sanada), Eugene’s powerful images expose decades of gross negligence by the country’s Chisso Corporation.”

In addition to Minamata, Hulu will debut the first season of Maggie starring Rebecca Rittenhouse.

“It’s hard enough being a young, single woman in the world today – it’s harder when you also happen to be a psychic,” reads the synopsis. “Maggie has true psychic abilities, meaning she regularly sees the future of her friends, parents, clients, and random strangers on the street. But when she begins to see glimpses of her own destiny at the same time that she meets an unexpected guy, her life gets even more comedically complicated. Can you let yourself fall in love when you think you know how it ends? She probably should have seen this coming.”
