Box Office Results: Jurassic World Dominion Stomps to Impressive Domestic Opening

Audiences turned out in droves to see the latest dinosaur extravaganza, elevating Jurassic World: Dominion — the third and “final” (yeah, right) film in the Jurassic World franchise and fifth sequel to Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park — to an impressive $143 million domestically over its first three days of release, per Deadline. Pundits originally pegged Colin Trevorrow’s epic to open around $124 million, but moviegoers were clearly eager to see their favorite prehistoric beasts duke it out on the big screen once more.

In terms of openings, Dominion falls far below 2015’s Jurassic World, which surprised everyone when it accrued $208 million over its debut weekend, and is off roughly 3% from Fallen Kingdom, which took in $148 million in June of 2018. The grand opening proves this franchise is critic proof (just 30% of critics awarded the flick a positive review, with our own Jonathan Sim called it “a confused final entry” in his review) and far from extinct.

Worldwide, Dominion dominated with a massive $176 million, bringing its worldwide total to $389 million. Imax accounted for $25 million of that global tally, including $6.3 million from China. Now we have to see whether word of mouth (audiences awarded the dino pic an A- CinemaScore) can propel Dominion to greater heights in the coming weeks.

Elsewhere, Tom Cruise’s hit sequel Top Gun: Maverick squared off against the competition with aplomb, raking in another $50 million (down just 44%) to bring its domestic total to $393 million. Worldwide, the action flick has amassed an astounding $747 million after just three weeks of release despite losing many of its Imax screens to the dinosaurs. Maverick should eventually overtake Mission: Impossible – Fallout to become Cruise’s top global earner. Now the question is whether or not it can soar past the billion dollar mark. Of note, the original Top Gun earned $357.1 million in 1986, which climbs to $924 million when adjusted for inflation.
