According to a recent report from Variety, Disney and Marvel’s recently released Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has earned $36 million in Thursday previews, ahead of what they’re forecasting could be an incredible $175 million-plus debut over the weekend. Currently, this ranks as the eighth largest preview performance ever, sitting behind Avengers: Infinity War, which earned $39 million in 2018.

Besides the stellar start for the highly anticipated film, Doctor Strange‘s box office performance also shows just how powerful Marvel Studios is amongst fans. Releasing earlier overseas, the sequel film has already earned $85.7 million from more than 40 overseas markets, including France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Korea. Early forecasts for the international scene also suggest that the film will gross somewhere in the range of $125-140 million over the weekend.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees the return of Benedict Cumberbatch in his role as Dr. Stephen Strange. This time, the Sorcerer Supreme will join Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, who finally transformed into the Scarlet Witch during the WandaVision finale.

Additional cast includes MCU alums Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, and Rachel McAdams, who are reprising their roles as Karl Mordo, Wong, and Dr. Christine Palmer, respectively. It will also feature the live-action debut of Marvel hero America Chavez, who will be portrayed by newcomer Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club).
