The Batman Scores Biggest Pandemic Opening for Warner Bros.

To the surprise of no one, Matt Reeves’ sensational The Batman scored a huge opening at the domestic box office. What’s surprising is just how high this Batman flew — $128.5 million from 4,417 theaters, which is the second best opening in the pandemic era behind only Spider-Man: No Way Home, per Deadline. This, despite a massive three-hour run time and a gritty tone that’s decidedly not kid-friendly.

Internationally, the superhero film starring Robert Pattison as the titular caped crusader totaled $120 million to bring its worldwide total to an impressive $248.5 million. The start marks the best opening for Reeves, who previously guided Dawn for the Planet of the Apes to a $73 million domestic/$104.3 million worldwide opening in 2014 and the biggest for WB since 2019’s Joker, which earned $93.5 million domestically/$247 million worldwide in its first frame.

On Imax, the film hauled in $22.3 million worldwide, the second-biggest opening on the format since 2019. In comparison to other Batman films, The Batman was well behind Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight ($158 million in 2008) and The Dark Knight Rises ($160 million in 2012), but far ahead of Batman Begins ($48 million in 2005) and Tim Burton’s Batman ($40 million in 1989) and Batman Returns ($45 million in 1992), unadjusted for inflation.

Now we get to see just how much The Batman can accrue over the next several weeks before its HBO Max premiere in mid-April. There aren’t any notable releases until Sony’s long-delayed Morbius hits on April 1, so the film should continue to rake in the big bucks for the time being, particularly since word of mouth is very positive thus far.
