Robert Pattinson Reflects on The Lighthouse & the Infamous ‘What’ Scene

Robert Pattinson is set to star next in the high-profile superhero film The Batman, but he is also known for participating in smaller films as well, with one of his most recent being Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse.

In a new video from GQ where he breaks down some of his more iconic roles, Pattinson talked about The Lighthouse, saying that he loved Eggers’ previous film, The Witch, and that he wanted to try and work with as he viewed him as a “special director.”

“I had such a good time on Good Time, and I wanted to swing wildly in the other direction,” Pattinson says. “But I wanted everything to be strange, and I kind of said to Robert, ‘I only want to do strange things.’ And Robert came back with The Lighthouse and said, ‘If this isn’t strange enough for you, then I don’t think I’m capable of anything stranger than this.'”

One of the more iconic and memorable moments in The Lighthouse features a scene between Pattinson’s Ephraim Winslow and Willem Dafoe’s Thomas Wake getting into a shouting match after repeating “What?” to one another before Dafoe delivers a long monologue. Speaking on that scene, Pattinson talked about how great it was to work with Dafoe.

“It was absolutely great working with Willem. We rehearsed for about a week before we started shooting, and he has so much energy. It’s just unreal. It’s almost like working with a six-year-old. There’s nothing that fatigues them, so I was kind of a little bit terrified, because at the beginning, we’d rehearse the entire movie, and then the second we got to the end, he’s like ‘Again!’ and just start doing it again, and his energy hadn’t even been dented.”

“The scene where we’re saying ‘What?’ to each other, just going ‘What?’ ‘What?’ ‘What?’ What?’ ‘What?’ ‘What?’ I just remember seeing that in the script,” he continued. “It was over three pages, where everyone’s line was just, it was just saying ‘What?’ ‘What?’ ‘What?’ and you’re looking at it going, ‘This can’t actually be in the script.’ It’s one of those things where you go, ‘I’m not going to see this again ever in my entire life, and I want to be the person to say this, because I’d be really, really annoyed if someone else gets to do it.'”

Pattinson doesn’t appear to be in Eggers’ next film, The Northman. However, Willem Dafoe is and plays Heimir the Fool.
