Sony Pictures Acquires Rights to Freddie Gibbs-Led Down with the King

According to a recent report from Deadline, Sony Pictures’ Stage 6 Films has acquired the worldwide rights to Down with the King, a movie starring Grammy-nominated rapper and songwriter Freddie Gibbs.

Down with the King recently had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, as part of its ACID lineup. The film also took home the Grand Prize at the Deauville American Film Festival, earning huge praise in the process. The film follows rap star Money Merc (Gibbs) as he struggles with his disillusionment within the music industry and the various pressures that come with being a celebrity. In the film, Merc leaves the city for a small-town farming community in order to try and re-evaluate his life and career.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Sony Pictures to bring Down with the King to the world and showcase Freddie Gibbs’ incredible talent beyond music,” said the director in a statement to Deadline.

Down with the King is written and directed by Diego Ongaro, with Gibbs attached in a starring role alongside Jamie Neumann, David Krumholtz, Sharon Washington, and Bob Tarasuk. Xabi Molia also serves as a writer for the film, with Rob Cristiano, Kim Jackson, and Zach LeBeau producing the film.
