Channing Tatum Expresses Desire to ‘Change the Superhero Movie’ with Gambit

Though technically it’s still not official, it’s looking more and more likely that Channing Tatum will become the new Gambit in the X-Men franchise and the actor recently revealed to MTV they’re starting to lay down the ground work for his potential future in the franchise.

“Creatively, we’re starting to chug forward. Obviously there’s nothing [official],” Tatum said. “There are only conversations and dreams right now, really.”

Previous reports indicated that he would be introduced in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse and would follow that with his own spin-off film. Now Tatum says that may not be the case, but either way, they’re hoping to change the idea of superhero movies with the character.

“We’ve talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the ‘hero, superhero movie.’ Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He’s a thief. He walks on the gray. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones.”

Though no writer or director have been attached to the project, it’s possible that Gambit could be the “Untitled FOX Marvel Movie” which is currently set for release on July 18, 2018. Check back for more information on the project as we learn it.

Created by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee in 1990, the New Orleans native mutant quickly became a fan favorite due to his kinetic energy manipulation abilities and penchant for stealing. The character’s only big screen appearance to date (outside his name being featured as an Easter egg in X2) was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Taylor Kitsch.
