Free Guy Stays Atop the Box Office, Posts Best 2nd Weekend Hold During Pandemic

Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy continues to bring a much-needed positive vibe at the box office.

The original action/comedy remained atop the charts with $18.8 million over the three-day weekend — an amazing drop of just 34% from its opening weekend, and the best second-weekend hold for any wide release this summer, per Deadline. That number also bests the likes of Peter Rabbit 2 (-40%), Boss Baby 2 (-45%), Forever Purge (-43%), and Stillwater (-45%) as well as Reynolds’ entire filmography, including animated films Turbo (-36%) and Croods (-39%). All told, Free Guy has amassed an impressive $58.8 million after 10 days.

Elsewhere, Paw Patrol took a bite out of the competition with a healthy $13 million from 3,184 theaters despite being available on Paramount+. Clearly, family films and thrillers are the only content people are willing to venture to theaters to see, which bodes well for Candyman and Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The remaining new releases struggled out of the gate, which is to be expected during the month of August, pandemic or not. The Protege led the pack with $2.93 million, followed by Searchlight’s long-delayed The Night House ($2.869 million), and WB’s Hugh Jackman led Reminiscence ($2 million), which was also made available on HBO Max.
