The Winchesters: Jensen Ackles’ Supernatural Prequel in Development

The CW is working on a Supernatural prequel that will bring back star Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester in a narrator role.

Called The Winchesters, the prequel will focus on Dean and Sam Winchester’s parents, John and Mary. Ackles will serve as the show’s narrator and is an executive producer on the show alongside his wife Danneel. The show currently has a script commitment and will be written by former Supernatural co-executive producer Robbie Thompson.

“Before Sam and Dean, there was John and Mary,” reports Deadline. “Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), The Winchesters is the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.”

Supernatural lasted 15 seasons on The CW and ran from September 15, 2005 through November 19, 2020. It starred Ackles and Jared Padalecki in the lead roles.

“AfterSupernatural wrapped its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over. Because like we say in the show, ‘nothing ever really ends, does it?’” Jensen Ackles told Deadline. “When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”
