According to a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is currently in early development on a sequel to the recently released film. Director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are expected to return for the film, although it’s unknown if Stone will be reprising her role as Cruella de Vil.

“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” said a Disney spokesperson to The Hollywood Reporter. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

After debuting simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+, Cruella has been a smash hit for Disney, all things considered. The film has earned $48.5 million globally, and has received great reviews for its cast and take on the character, so it isn’t too surprising to see Disney already planning for a future sequel.

Disney’s Cruella is directed by I, Tonya filmmaker Craig Gillespie from a screenplay written by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, based on a story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel & Steve Zissis. It is executive produced by original Cruella actress Glenn Close with Emma Stone, Michelle Wright, Jared LeBoff, Andrew Gunn, Marc Platt, and Kristin Burr set as producers. Two-time Oscar-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan (Mad Max: Fury Road) creates the dazzling and imaginative costumes, which take on a life of their own.
