Focus Features has officially announced the release date for Paul Schrader’s upcoming revenge thriller feature The Card Counter, starring Oscar Isaac and Tye Sheridan. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on September 10, 2021, which pits the film directly against James Wan’s newest horror film Malignant.

The Card Counter‘s filming last year encountered a few setbacks and was one of the many major film productions that was temporarily shut down due to an unnamed actor, who reportedly has a small role in the role, testing positive for COVID-19. After nearly four months, the project was able to resume its production on a few remaining scenes which only lasted for a week.

In The Card Counter, William Tell’s spartan existence on the casino trail is shattered when he is approached by Cirk, a vulnerable and angry young man seeking help to execute his plan for revenge on a military colonel. Tell sees a chance at redemption through his relationship with Cirk. Gaining backing from mysterious gambling financier La Linda, Tell takes Cirk with him on the road, going from casino to casino until the unlikely trio set their sights on winning the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. However, things get difficult when Tell realizes that trying to keep Cirk on the right path proves to be an impossible task as he gets dragged back into the darkness of his past.

The film stars Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina, Star Wars), four-time Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate, Platoon), Tiffany Haddish (Girls’ Trip, The Kitchen), and Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One).
