Christian Bale is known for undergoing dramatic body transformations for his film projects (such as beefing up for The Dark Knight or drastically slimming down for The Machinist). He looks quite different in Thor: Love and Thunder from his usual self. In fact, he looked so unlike his usual self that he was able to enjoy a beach day in Sydney, Australia, without being recognized by most people. This is due to a slimmed-down look and a shaved head.

According to the Daily Mail, Bale spent a day off with his family at Palm Beach. The lovely locale is an hour away from Sydney, which is where Thor: Love and Justice is being filmed. The 47-year-old is playing Gorr the God Butcher, who is the nemesis of Thor in the 2022 film.

In the comics, the supervillain grew up on a barren planet. After his family died due to the cruel conditions, Gorr lost his belief in gods and eventually vowed to kill them all after learning of their existence. He’s a relatively new character in the Marvel canon, as he was first introduced in 2013’s Thor: God of Thunder #2.

The fourth Thor film is being directed by New Zealand standout Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit). The script was written by Waititi and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Someone Great). Familiar faces are returning with Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Oscar-winner Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie.

In a chat with Waititi in 2019, the director wasn’t sure if the film would go with the storyline of Foster battling cancer.

“Even now, I’m not sure if we’re going to continue with that storyline. I really like it. The way the stories develop at Marvel is ever-changing. We know we’ve got Jane Foster, and that’s cool as it is. I personally like the storyline where she’s fighting this illness and the whole thing with her choosing between fighting that and becoming a god. That’s cool, but it always changes. Between now and when we shoot, it’s gonna change. As it did with ‘Ragnarok’! We kept changing it while we were shooting.”

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to release May 6, 2022.
