There’s nothing like watching the MonsterVerse Titans duke it out on the biggest screens possible. Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong raked in $6.7M yesterday, smashing the box office as we ease into a Holiday weekend. The Warner Bros. and Legendary film now brings its two-day total up to $16.3 million at 2,409 sites, a number that will only increase as more theaters open this weekend. Los Angeles and Houston will mark more major cinema reopenings for chains like Regal, which will follow suit from AMC, according to Deadline.

Godzilla vs. Kong is demonstrating that audiences are ready to go back to cinemas between its availability on IMAX, Prime, Dolby, 3D and Regal’s 4DX. Availability to watch the film on HBO Max is dwarfed in comparison to seeing Kong and Godzilla fight on the biggest screen possible. IMAX screens were reported to be quickly selling sold out throughout Los Angeles.

The five-day estimate for the release is looking in the range of $30M-$40M, only breaking the previous pandemic record also held by Warner Bros. Wonder Woman 1894 opened Christmas Day on limited screens and brought the studio $7.5M. The monster imprint on theaters demonstrates that there are still bucks to be made as more theaters around the world open.

Warner Bros./Legendary’s epic showdown between the greats is directed by Adam Wingard (Death Note) with a script from Eric Pearson (Black Widow) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla: King of the Monsters). The film is based on a story treatment from Zach Shields, Michael Doughtery (Krampus) and Terry Rossio (Shrek).

The cast includes franchise stars Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) and Kyle Chandler (First Man) and introduces Alexander Skarsgård (The Stand), Rebecca Hall (The Night House), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta), Shun Oguri (Gintama), Eiza González (Baby Driver), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2) and Demián Bichir (Land). With Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod and Brian Rogers, with Kenji Okuhira, Yoshimitsu Banno, Jon Jashni and Thomas Tull serving as executive producers. Jay Ashenfelter, Jen Conroy and Tamara Kent co-produce.
