Nobody and Godzilla vs. Kong Take Top Spots at the Box Office

Nobody, Universal’s action flick starring Bob Odenkirk as a husband who succumbs to his inner rage to exact his own brand of bloody justice, opened at No. 1 at the domestic box office with $6.7M from 2,460 theaters. As we say every week, keep in mind that even with LA theaters opened to the public, venues are still only operating at 25% capacity with expected expansion to 50% by Easter.

That news bodes well for Nobody‘s longevity, although it faces Godzilla vs. Kong and Mortal Kombat in the coming weeks. According to Deadline, guy flicks like Nobody, namely Unhinged and The Marksman, have been doing a 5x multiplier during the pandemic, which could put the action pic at around $30M by the end of its run. But, at this point with all the uncertainty around theater reopening, who knows what will happen?

In No. 2 was Raya and the Last Dragon with $3.5M (-32%), bringing its total to $28.4M after four weeks, while Tom & Jerry grossed another $2.5M for a $37.1M total after its fifth week.

INTERNATIONAL

The big news internationally was the huge release of Godzilla vs. Kong, which totaled a whopping $122M from 38 overseas markets, including $70.34M from China. On IMAX, the film generated $12.4M from 891 screens, becoming Hollywood’s biggest IMAX release since December of 2019. The film opens this week in the U.S.

Also opening overseas in Austrailia was Sony’s Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, which grossed an impressive $2.1M just in time for the Easter holiday. The sequel to the hit 2018 film releases worldwide in mid-May through July.

Raya and the Last Dragon added another $3.9M for an international cume of $54.2M and an $82.6M worldwide haul. While the GvK release pushed Avatar’s re-release down to third with $3.5M for a running tally of $51.7M after three weeks. Finally, Nobody collected $5.03M to bring its worldwide total to $11.7M.
