Pierce Brosnan Joins Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam as Doctor Fate

As the film gears up to start production next month, the Dwayne Johnson-fronted DC Extended Universe outing Black Adam has rounded out its cast of Justice Society of America actors as Golden Globe nominee Pierce Brosnan (The Foreigner) has signed on to star as iconic hero Doctor Fate, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Alongside Brosnan, the roster of Justice Society of America will see Noah Centineo (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before) star as Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell (Trinkets) as Cyclone and Aldis Hodge (One Night in Miami) as Hawman. The film will also star Sarah Shahi (City on a Hill) and Marwan Kenzari (Aladdin), though their roles are currently being kept close to the antihero chest.

The announcement of the introduction of the Justice Society of America came during last year’s DC FanDome event, though also having confirmed that Hawkgirl, frequent partner and romantic interest of Hawkman, would have to remain absent from the DC Extended Universe for the time being. The character was recently seen portrayed by Shiera Sanders Hall as part of Stargirl‘s JSA, though she lost her life to Brainwave on the night the Injustice Society attacked the group’s headquarters.

Johnson has been attached to and developing a Black Adam film for over a decade now, with the sometimes supervillain, sometimes antihero originally slated to make his highly-anticipated debut in 2019’s Shazam!, though the studio elected to split the characters off into individual films to allow them breathing room and proper development, instead choosing to tease the character as Djimon Hounsou’s original wizard Shazam tells his origin story to Billy Batson.

Based on the DC Comics character created by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck, Black Adam is set to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) with Johnson starring as the titular anti-hero and Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshiryani having written the current script while Adam Stztykiel penned the prior one. The film will be the second collaboration between Collet-Serra and Johnson, who have also been working together on Disney’s forthcoming adventure film Jungle Cruise.

The film is being produced by Johnson and FlynnPicturesCo’s Beau Flynn alongside Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions, while Scott Sheldon will be overseeing the project for FlynnPictureCo.

Black Adam was slated to hit theaters on December 22, 2021, but was recently pushed back to an unspecified release date due to production delays from the global pandemic and s reportedly set to start production next month in Atlanta.
