New Bewitched Movie in the Works at Sony Pictures

49 years after ABC’s Bewitched wrapped up its 8-season run in 1972, Deadline brings word that Sony Pictures is in the process of developing a new film based on Sol Saks’ classic 60s sitcom. This comes after Marvel Studios’ WandaVision famously used Bewitched as one of its episodes’ many inspirations. The project also marks the second time that the studio will be adapting the story to the big screen, with the first one being 2005’s romantic-comedy version starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell.

Unlike the Nora Ephron-directed film, the upcoming Bewitched will adapt more of the original sitcom’s storyline in which a witch marries an advertising exec and then tries to hide her powers and her crazy relatives who drop in often. Further details about its characters are still being kept under wraps.

The project will be written by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, the duo behind the shows MacGyver and 12 Monkeys. It is produced by John Davis and John Fox through their Davis Entertainment banner. Matalas and Fickett are also currently working on a Witch Mountain remake for Disney+

The original sitcom ran-on air for eight seasons from 1964-1972. It starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha and Dick York/Dick Sargent as Darrin Stephens. It is considered one of the greatest sitcoms in television history, especially thanks to the show’s breaking of many cultural stereotypes at the time.
