Disney’s live-action film Chip ‘N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers begins filming

Following yesterday’s announcement for the production start of Disney+’s Peter Pan & Wendy, it looks like another live-action Disney project has also moved forward. The Lonely Island took to Instagram confirming that filming on Disney’s upcoming live-action/CGI hybrid film adaptation of Chip ‘N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers has finally begun.

The project was officially announced last December during Disney’s Investor Day. There, it was revealed that The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer has officially stepped in to replace Robert Rugan as its director. SNL alums Andy Samberg and John Mulaney will lead the film as they lend their voices to the titular iconic chipmunk duo.

The project has been in development since 2014 with Robert Rugan previously attached to helm the film. The live-action film is co-written by How I Met Your Mother’s Dan Gregor and Doug Mand with David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman serving as producers. Batman v Superman cinematographer Larry Fong has also boarded the film.

Golden Globe winner Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Saturday Night Live, Palm Springs) and Emmy winner Mulaney (John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Big Mouth) will star in the title roles with Emmy nominee Seth Rogen (This Is the End, An American Pickle, Long Shot) appearing in a cameo.

Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers is slated for a spring 2022 release.

Created by Tad Stones and Alan Zaslove, the original series aired on The Disney Channel from 1989 to 1990 (a preview episode aired on August 27, 1988). It featured Chip ‘n Dale along with their friends Gadget Hackwrench, Zipper, and Monterey Jack as they faced off against some of the most outrageous villains the world has ever seen.
