Netflix Developing Bird Box Spanish Spin-Off Film

While currently working on a direct follow-up to the Sandra Bullock-led horror-thriller, Netflix has announced it is expanding its Bird Box universe with a Spanish spin-off film hailing from writing/directing duo Àlex and David Pastor (Carriers).

Plot details are currently being kept close to the chest, but the film will be written and directed by the Pastor brothers, well known for their work on the Chris Pine-led pandemic thriller Carriers and acclaimed HBO Max mystery-thriller series The Head. The project will see Dylan Clark (The Batman) and Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw) return to produce alongside Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls for Nostromo Pictures, while original director Susanne Bier is set to executive produce alongside Chris Morgan Productions’ Ainsley Davies and Brian Williams for Dylan Clark Productions.

Bird Box was a massive success for Netflix after being viewed by 45,037,125 accounts, which gave it the best (at the time) first 7 days ever for a Netflix movie. Critical reception was mixed with only 63 percent awarding the horror drama a positive review on review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes while just 57 percent of audiences gave it a thumbs up. Even so, a sequel will likely generate plenty of buzz.

Bier directed the movie from a screenplay by Eric Heisserer (Arrival).

Bird Box was produced by Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan, and Clayton Townsend and also starred Jacki Weaver, Rosa Salazar, Danielle Macdonald, Lil Rel Howery, Tom Hollander, Colson Baker, and BD Wong.
