Thor 4: Natalie Portman May Have Confirmed a Major Plot Point

Thor 4: Natalie Portman May Have Confirmed a New Plot Detail

When Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder was officially announced at last year’s San Diego Comic Con, Taika Waititi teased that the fourth Thor film will be drawing inspirations from Jason Aaron’s “The Mighty Thor” comics. However, Waititi understandably didn’t further elaborated on what parts of said comic’s storyline fans should expect to see in the upcoming film.

Now we may have an idea about one of the key plot details of the new MCU film, with Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman seemingly confirming in a recent interview with Yahoo that her character Jane would also be going through cancer treatment, just like in the comics. In addition, Portman has also opened up about her current superhero training as Thor: Love and Thunder continues to prepare for its production start in Australia.

“I can’t tell you that much,” Portman said. “I’m really excited. I’m starting to train, to get muscles. If there can be all these female superheroes, the more of them there are, the better it is. I’m trying to think — it’s based on the graphic novel of ‘The Mighty Thor.’ She’s going through cancer treatment and is a superhero on the side.”

Last year Waititi told us he and Marvel were still wavering on whether or not Jane Foster’s cancer plotline would be included in Thor: Love and Thunder.

“There’s nothing funnier than cancer,” joked Waititi. “Even now I’m not sure if we’re going to continue with that storyline. I really like it. The way the stories develop at Marvel is ever-changing. We know we’ve got Jane Foster, and that’s cool as it is. I personally like the storyline where she’s fighting this illness and the whole thing with her choosing between fighting that and becoming a god. That’s cool, but it always changes. Between now and when we shoot it’s gonna change. As it did with ‘Ragnarok’! We kept changing it while we were shooting. (laughs) ‘Let’s reshoot this thing because now guess what the villain wants?’ But I did love that storyline.”

Thor: Love and Thunder will be directed by Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) on a script co-written by him and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Someone Great), which will be the followup to Waititi’s wildly successful 2017 sequel Thor: Ragnarok. Oscar-winner Natalie Portman is set to return as Jane and will now be wielding the mighty Mjolnir. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson will also return as Thor and Valkyrie, respectively. Academy Award winner Christian Bale (The Dark Knight trilogy) will portray the main antagonist in the film. The female Thor storyline is based on Jason Aaron’s run on “The Mighty Thor” in which a cancer-stricken Jane Foster takes up the mantle and powers of Thor.

Thor and Valkyrie were last seen in this year’s highest-grossing film of all time Avengers: Endgame, with the god of thunder entrusting his responsibilities as the King of Asgard to Valkyrie as he joins the Guardians of the Galaxy on their next mission. According to Vin Diesel, the Guardians might also make an appearance in the fourth Thor film.
