Production begins on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2

Sony Imageworks’ Lead animator Nick Kondo took to Twitter to reveal that production has officially begun on Sony Pictures’ highly-anticipated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel. This confirmation comes after the studio had decided to change the film’s previous planned release date. Originally scheduled for an April 2022 release, the Spider-Verse sequel has now been pushed back to October 7, 2022 which will be over three years since the Oscar-winning first film had its theatrical release in 2018.

Sony Imageworks was also the studio that handled animation for the first film. They were responsible for the film’s comic impressive CGI animation which gave it a comic book design feel to it. The studio had reportedly used more than 170 animators to create Into the Spider-Verse.

Joaquim Dos Santos (Voltron: Legendary Defenders) will direct the upcoming sequel. He will also be joined by screenwriter David Callaham, whose previous credits include Wonder Woman 1984 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

In addition to its impressive run on the awards circuit leading up to the Oscars, the animated epic took in $350 million at the box office and introduced Miles Morales as Spider-Man to a new generation. Shameik Moore, star of The Get Down and Dope, voices Miles Morales in the film. He is joined by Liev Schreiber as Kingpin, Mahershala Ali as Miles’ Uncle Aaron, Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’ father Jefferson,  Luna Lauren Velez as Miles’ mother Rio, Lily Tomlin as Aunt May, with Hailee Steinfeld as Spider-Gwen, Jake Johnson as Peter Parker along with Kimiko Glenn (Orange Is the New Black) as SP//dr aka Peni Parker; comedian John Mulaney as Spider-Ham; and Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman. The script was written by Phil Lord, who produced the film along with Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Christopher Miller, and Christina Steinberg.
