UK Studios Beginning to Reopen As Film, TV Projects Attempt to Restart Production

According to Deadline, some of the UK’s biggest studios are beginning to reopen as film and television projects are attempting to head back into production. Two of those studios, Elstree Studios and Twickenham Studios, announced work has resumed while other studios are preparing to begin shoots once more in the coming weeks.

One of the studios set to reopen soon includes Arborfield, which was one of the first to be impacted by the pandemic when Netflix was forced to shut down filming on the second season of The Witcher after actor Kristofer Hivju tested posted for COVID-19. Bob Terry, Arborfield’s managing director, said they and sister studio Longcross are currently in the process of working towards reopening as meetings are scheduled over the next two weeks to “finalize safety procedures.”

Maidstone Studios has reportedly installed Perspex screens, hand sanitizers, social distancing tape, and have reconfigured their office space in hopes to reopen early next month. Sites for Pinewood Studios Group and BBC Studioworks have remained open during the crisis.

Elstree Studios and Twickenham Studio have not revealed which productions are restarting filming on their sites, though the outlet notes it was a “major Hollywood production” for the latter. Jeremy Rainbird, Twickenham Studios partner, said with the measures they have put in place, he feels “it is a perfect place for people to reboot various production workflows by accessing the site safely and securely.”
