Reese Witherspoon signs on for two Netflix rom-coms
According to Deadline, Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon has officially signed on for the leading roles in Netflix’s two newest romantic comedy films: Your Place Or Mine and The Cactus. These projects will mark the first collaboration between Witherspoon and the streaming service with the acclaimed actress also serving as a producer on both films through her Hello Sunshine banner.
“We have been looking for the right feature opportunities to collaborate with Ted Sarandos, Scott Stuber and the entire team at Netflix for a while and we couldn’t be more excited to be working with them on these two romantic comedies,” Witherspoon said. “Both Sarah Haywood’s and Aline Brosh McKenna’s stories blend everything we love about traditional RomComs with strong, smart and determined female leads.
This project will also serve as Witherspoon’s comeback to the comedy genre as she is not only lauded for her works in drama films and shows but is also known for her works in iconic comedy films such as: Election, Legally Blonde, and Sweet Home Alabama.
Based on an original screenplay by Aline Brosh McKenna, Your Place Or Mine will revolved around the story of two long-distance best friends who change each other’s lives when she decides to pursue a lifelong dream and he volunteers to keep an eye on her teenage son.
“I’m the hugest Reese Witherspoon fan on earth, not just of her immense talents as an actor but also her producing skills,” said Brosh McKenna. “I couldn’t be more excited to direct this movie for Netflix, working alongside Aggregate and Hello Sunshine.”
The film will be the directorial debut for Aline Brosh McKenna, who is best known for writing 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada. It will also be produced by Hello Sunshine’s Lauren Neustadter along with Aggregate Films’ Jason Bateman (Ozark) and Michael Costigan which will be part of their first-look deal with Netflix.
Based on author Sarah Haywood’s bestselling novel of the same name, The Cactus will follow the story of a reserved 45-year-old woman, when an unexpected pregnancy causes her to rethink the structured life she has created for herself and leads her on an unconventional journey toward love, family and learning to embrace the unexpected.
The book was first published in May 2019. The film adaptation will be produced by Hello Sunshine’s Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter.
