Mark Ruffalo Talks Hulk’s Future, Says He Would Love to Lead a Stand-Alone Movie
During an interview with Variety, MCU star Mark Ruffalo expressed his wishes to reprise his role as Bruce Banner and his alter-ego the Hulk in future sequels or spinoffs but says there’s not “a done deal” regarding whether Hulk will ever return.
“There’s nothing completely at a place where it’s a done deal. There’s some talk of having Banner/Hulk show up in [the Disney+ series] She-Hulk. If we come up with something good, that would be really interesting. Right now that’s about it. That’s all there is on the table,” said Ruffalo.
The Oscar-nominated actor, who is set to voice an episode as his MCU character in Disney+’s upcoming animated series What If…?, also revealed that he would love to lead a stand-alone movie for his Hulk (as Edward Norton and Eric Bana did in the past) but hasn’t had the opportunity to do so.
“There’s an idea that I think could be really interesting. We’ve never really followed him into his life. He’s always kind of off on the side. He’s like the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the Avengers. It’d be interesting to fill in all the blanks about what happened to him in between all these movies,” Ruffalo added.
Before starring in 2012’s The Avengers, though, Ruffalo was admittedly apprehensive about playing the character. “I did try to talk them out of casting me. I said, ‘I don’t know if I’m the right guy, I’ve never done anything like this.’ Between Joss [Whedon] and Robert [Downey Jr.], they were pretty convincing that I could do it. I was scared. I was really scared. I’m still scared. The technological aspect of it makes it really hard to work that way. I struggle with it all the time. But my motto is make fear your friend. Just keep pushing yourself into those places where you feel scared or challenged.”
Being a comic book fan as a kid ultimately helped the actor embrace the challenge, having grown up reading X-Men and Wolverine. With Disney/Marvel now owning FOX, including the rights to the X-Men movie franchise, Ruffalo thinks that maybe “Hulk and Wolverine could hook up” in the future.
