Disney Release date shifts for Black Widow, Eternals, Shang-Chi & more

According to Deadline, Disney release date shifts have been announced for their high-profile theatrical films, including Marvel Studios’ Black Widow and Niki Caro’s live-action film adaptation of Mulan, which were both delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that caused theater chains around the world to shut down.

Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow is now scheduled to be released on November 6, 2020, which was originally held by Chloe Zhao’s star-studded superhero film The Eternals, who have now been moved to February 12, 2021. In addition, Marvel’s entire 2021 and 2022 original slate have also been changed with: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings moving to May 7, 2021; Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness to November 5, 2021; Thor: Love And Thunder to February 18, 2022; and Captain Marvel 2 has now been set to July 8, 2022. Meanwhile, Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther 2 will still retain its May 8, 2022 release.

Scarlett Johansson returns as Natasha Romanoff, a spy and assassin who grew up being trained by the KGB before breaking from their grasp and becoming an agent of SHIELD and an Avenger. Black Widow is expected to be set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, but before Avengers: Infinity War.

Originally set to debut last March 27, the Liu Yifei-led Mulan film is now expected to make its debut on July 24, 2020 which pushes back Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s action-adventure film Jungle Cruise to a full year on July 30, 2021. In addition, 20th Century Studios’ fantasy comedy Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds has also moved from July 3 to December 11 of this year.

Mulan features a celebrated international cast led by Liu Yifei (The Forbidden Kingdom, Once Upon a Time) was cast as Hua Mulan following a year-long global casting search. Joining her are Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Commander Tung; Jason Scott Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny) as Böri Khan; Yoson An (The Meg) as Cheng Honghui; with Gong Li (Memoirs of a Geisha, Raise the Red Lantern) as Xianniang and Jet Li (Shaolin Temple, Lethal Weapon 4) as the Emperor.
