Scarlett Johansson Reveals Black Widow Is a Family Drama Movie

Fans will have to wait for a bit longer than expected to watch the upcoming Black Widow solo movie. The reason why is the COVID-19 outbreak that forced Disney to delay the movie’s official release. Speaking with Total Film (via Games Radar), Johansson confessed that she was surprised at first by the film’s tone. It seems we’ll see Black Widow in a family drama.

“I think part of Kevin Feige’s genius is that he always thinks about what fans expect out of these films and then gives them something that they never could’ve dreamed of,” Johansson said. “The idea of Natasha Romanoff in a family drama is the least expected thing, and I had to wrap my head around what that was going to be because there’s such a big tonal shift.”

Over the years, the MCU took over different genres. For example, space opera (Guardians of the Galaxy), Afro-futurism (Black Panther), political thriller (The Winter Soldier), just to name a few.

The upcoming movie will cover Natasha’s origin history with the Red Room. This story will deal with the family of superheroes that Black Widow was in before joining the Avengers.

“I think from the very beginning when we first started talking about doing this standalone film, there was no reason to do it unless we could really dig deep and be brave and go there,” Johansson added.

At the moment, Natasha Romanoff is officially dead in the MCU. Yet Marvel Studios found a way around that to give her a standalone. The story will pick up after the events of Captain America: Civil War. The upcoming Black Widow solo movie kicks off Marvel’s Phase Four.
