Doctor Strange 2 Continuing Remote Pre-Production for June Start Date

Marvel Studios is not taking the current COVID-19 crisis lying down, as Variety reports that their big budget sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has been continuing pre-prodcution remotely, with director Sam Raimi presumably leading the way. According to sources the film is still on track to start shooting in June, despite the possibility of set construction, international travel and work with large crews still being an issue by then.

This is going against the grain of other big tentpoles like The Batman, The Matrix 4, Mission: Impossible 7 and Red Notice delaying their productions indefinitely. The delays have caused havoc on those productions, with many stars having to postpone their next films and supporting players having to bow out to be recast at a later date.

Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Dr. Stephen Strange, with Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff. Olsen’s upcoming Disney+ series, WandaVision, will also tie into the sequel. Additionally, Marvel’s Kevin Feige has confirmed that the Loki series will be linked to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as well. Filming is expected to begin in June.

The film recently hired Loki head writer Michael Waldron to rewrite the script from Jade Bartlett, with Spider-Man‘s Sam Raimi to take over the directorial reigns on the project from Scott Derrickson.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong and Elizabeth Olsen will co-star, with Rachel McAdams not expected to return to her role of Dr. Christine Palmer.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2021.
