BREAKING: Disney Delays Mulan, The New Mutants and Antlers

Just when it looked as if the long-awaited New Mutants was finally about to catch a break, Disney has announced that it will be postponing the releases of the last Fox Marvel film, as well as the upcoming live-action remake of Mulan and the Keri Russell-led horror movie Antlers to currently unknown later 2020 dates amidst coronavirus concerns, according to The Wrap.

As you know this has been a rapidly evolving situation and I wanted to make you aware that we are postponing the releases of Mulan, The New Mutants and Antlers out of an abundance of caution,” Disney said in a statement. “We truly believe in the moviegoing experience, and we are looking at new potential 2020 release dates to be announced at a later date.”

When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Mulan features a celebrated international cast led by Liu Yifei (The Forbidden Kingdom, Once Upon a Time) was cast as Hua Mulan following a year-long global casting search. Joining her are Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Commander Tung; Jason Scott Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny) as Böri Khan; Yoson An (The Meg) as Cheng Honghui; with Gong Li (Memoirs of a Geisha, Raise the Red Lantern) as Xianniang and Jet Li (Shaolin Temple, Lethal Weapon 4) as the Emperor.

The film is directed by Niki Caro from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek based on the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.”

20th Century Studios in association with Marvel Entertainment presents The New Mutants, an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.

The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy (SplitThe Witch) as Magik and Maisie Williams (Game of Thronesgen:LOCK) as Wolfsbane, with Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Dani Moonstar, and Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton as Cannonball.

The New Mutants adapts the monthly comic book series of the same name that launched in 1982. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, The New Mutants follows on a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training in the Marvel Universe. The feature is expected to be a departure from the sci-fi-action spectacle of other X-Men films and is instead being described as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes”-style horror movie.

In November 2017, ComingSoon.net exclusively revealed a leaked concept animatic from the film, which features Wolfsbane, Magic, and Cannonball facing the Demon Bear.

In Antlers, a small-town Oregon teacher (Keri Russell) and her brother (Jesse Plemons), the local sheriff, discover that a young student (Jeremy T. Thomas) is harboring a dangerous secret with frightening consequences. The film also stars JT Corbitt, Graham Greene, Scott Haze, Rory Cochrane and Amy Madigan.

Directed by Scott Cooper (Hostiles), the film was written by C. Henry Chaisson (Open 24 Hours) & Nick Antosca and Scott Cooper, based upon the short story “The Quiet Boy” by Nick Antosca (Channel Zero). The film is produced by Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Scary Stories to Tell in the DarkNightmare Alley), David S. Goyer (The Dark KnightFoundation, Batman Begins), and Oscar-winner J. Miles Dale (The Shape of WaterThe StrainMama).

The trio of films continue a day full of delays and postponements, with Paramount Pictures pulling A Quiet Place Part IIThe Lovebirds and Blue Story from the calendars completely while Universal Pictures has pushed F9: The Fast Saga back by a whole year. MGM and Universal started the trend last week with the seven-month push of No Time to Die from April to November.
