Is Lethal Weapon 5 Actually Happening?

Whoa! Lethal Weapon 5 may actually happen. No, really. According to producer Dan Lin, who participated in a recent roundtable discussion to talk about the Academy Award-nominated film The Two Popes, it sounds like everyone is on board to bring Riggs and Murtaugh back to the big screen — even if they might seem a little too old for this s**t. You can check out the roundtable in the player below. Lin talks about Lethal Weapon beginning at 44:14.

“We’re trying to make the last ‘Lethal Weapon’ movie. And Dick Donner’s coming back,” said Lin. “The original cast is coming back. And it’s just amazing. The story itself is very personal to him. Mel and Danny are ready to go, so it’s about the script.”

That’s one helluva soundbite. Of course, the last we heard about Lethal Weapon 5 was that it was going to be titled Lethal Finale and that it was going to be very dark. This, from the man himself, Richard Donner:

“And I’m ready to do 5. It’s called ‘Lethal Finale.’ It’s very dark. And we were all set to go and now Warner Bros. is doing their old-fashioned tricks. Not Warner Bros., there’s this guy who runs the studio who’s great but they have these people in the legal department who do the negotiating in the most counter-productive way. They should be sent to a studio and work with the producers and directors and actors, and learn what makes a film, and then negotiate. But it’s just embarrassing. And it’s too bad, because there’s a wonderful writer named Channing Gibson, who wrote 4 for me, and we have a really great story. It is dark, but I wanted to end it on an emotional note, and I don’t think it’s gonna happen. It’s heartbreaking.”

That was way back in February of 2018. So, a lot of time has passed. Of course, if you’ve seen any of Gibson’s recent flicks, including the terrific Dragged Across Concrete, you’ll know he can still handle an action film. Glover just appeared in Jumanji: The Next Level, albeit in a small role that really played up his age. And, hey, Joe Pesci came out of retirement to deliver a knockout performance in The Irishman… maybe it is possible for a fifth go with everyone’s favorite cop duo. Hey, if we can get nine Fast and Furious movies, why can’t we have a fifth Lethal Weapon?

What do you think? Do you want another Lethal Weapon?
