Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Set for $450 Million Opening Weekend

It’s hard to believe there are only three days left until Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters, but in a less surprising notion, the finale to the Skywalker Saga is expecting to make a major smash at the box office in its opening weekend with $450 million globally, according to Deadline.

Though not as high as the sequel trilogy’s debut installment, The Force Awakens, this number does put it right on track with its immediate predecessor, The Last Jedi, which went on to gross over $1.3 billion and become the highest-grossing film of 2017 and second highest-grossing Star Wars film. To become the highest-grossing film this year it would have to become the highest-grossing film of all-time as 2019 saw the release of Avengers: Endgame, which grossed a behemoth $2.798 billion at the box office to beat Avatar for the milestone.

Returning cast members for The Rise of Skywalker include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo and Billie Lourd. Joining the cast are Naomi Ackie (Doctor Who), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lord of the Rings), and Keri Russell (The Americans), who will also be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian. The role of Leia Organa will once again be played by Carrie Fisher, using previously unreleased footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

In addition to directing, Abrams co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Terrio (ArgoJustice League). Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, and Abrams will produce, with Callum Greene and Jason McGatlin executive producing. Composer John Williams, who has scored every chapter in the Star Wars saga since 1977’s A New Hope, will return to a galaxy far, far away with Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is scheduled for release on December 20.
