Zombieland 2 Writers Say Ryan Reynolds Was Originally Included in Cast

In an interview with Deadline, Zombieland: Double Tap writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have revealed that Ryan Reynolds, who they’ve worked with on the blockbuster Deadpool films, was originally set to be included in the horror sequel’s cast for the role of Albuquerque.

The writing duo further explained that they did everything they could to make Reynold’s involvement in the sequel a possibility. But because of the A-list actor’s busy film schedule and family responsibilities, the plan fell through and the role ultimately went to Luke Wilson.

“We made it a goal to do only Ryan Reynolds movies,” Wernick joked. “But this one slipped through our fingers. Luke was amazing and it worked out terrific for us.”

However, even if Reynolds wasn’t able to work with Wernick and Reese on Zombieland 2, the trio is continuously collaborating together on two projects such as Michael Bay’s newest action-thriller 6 Underground and the remake of the 1985 comedy film Clue with Jason Bateman in talks to direct.

In Zombieland: Double Tap, through comic mayhem that stretches from the White House and through the heartland, these four slayers must face off against the many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.

The sequel features the return of stars Woody Harrelson (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Jesse Eisenberg (Now You See Me), Emma Stone (La La Land) and Abigail Breslin (Scream Queens). It will also feature new characters played by Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Zoey Deutch (Flower), Rosario Dawson (Jane the Virgin) and Luke Wilson (Old School).
