Walt Disney Animation announces four filmmakers developing projects for the studio
Variety is reporting that Walt Disney Animation has selected four filmmakers to develop four new animated features for the studio, including Carlos Lopez Estrada (Blindspotting, Legion), Suzi Yoonessi (Unlovable, Daphne & Velma, Dear Lemon Lima), Josie Trinidad (Ralph Breaks the Internet, Zootopia, Tangled), and Marc Smith (Zootopia, Frozen 2, Big Hero 6).
Walt Disney Animation chief creative officer Jennifer Lee (Frozen, Frozen 2) said: “We aim to have Walt Disney Animation Studios serve as the premiere home for filmmakers interested in telling engaging stories within the limitless animation medium. Carlos and Suzi are two incredible, inventive filmmakers who have both received acclaim for their work. Josie and Marc, master, lead story artists, have been instrumental in shaping such films as Zootopia and Frozen 2. We are so thrilled to have these four talented artists join our 96-year-old studio as directors and help us build the stories of our future — adventures in completely original worlds, stories from around the globe, and the next generation of musicals.”
The outlet notes that Lee has been working to increase Disney’s “commitment to diversity and inclusion.” One of Walt Disney Animation’s upcoming projects includes Adele Lim’s Raya and the Last Dragon starring Awkwafina and scheduled to release on November 25, 2020.
The studio’s latest film, Frozen 2, will be arriving in theaters on November 22. Frozen 2 will see the return of stars Kristen Bell (The Good Place), Idina Menzel and Josh Gad (Murder on the Orient Express), as well as the additions of Sterling K. Brown (This is Us) and Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld).
