Alamo Drafthouse hosting Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping sing-along
Time to start practicing your Donkey Roll again as the modern cult classic Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, starring and written by the comedy music group The Lonely Island, is coming to the Alamo Drafthouse in October for special sing-along screenings!
Universal Pictures’ Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is headlined by musical digital-shorts superstars Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, collectively known as The Lonely Island. The comedy goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all.
The classic cinema chain will be screening the music comedy at 26 of its locations across the nation, with the logline for the special sing-along version of the film reading as follows:
“With a hilarious lead performance from Andy Samberg, tons of killer cameos including Maya Rudolph, Sarah Silverman, Usher, and Adam Levine’s hologram (so expensive!), and tons of big laughs and bumpin’ tunez, Popstar has established itself as a modern cult classic. That’s why we’re inviting you to kick it with the boyz of the Lonely Island at the most baller Sing-Along of all time (#sohumble). We’ll have inflatable microphones and onscreen lyrics so you can get in on the jamz, glow necklaces and ribbon wands to dance along, and an American flag for you to wave around during Conner’s erotic ode to patriotism. And be sure to show up early for our Show Pony drawing contest before the film. So bring your crew, show us your Donkey Roll, and never stop never stopping at our Popstar Sing-Along. With fun props and lyrics up on the screen, you’ll be belting out all of Conner4Real’s greatest hits so loudly it’ll be like you just opened your Aquaspin refrigerator. DOINK DE DOINK!”
The comedy came from blockbuster producer Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, Superbad, Knocked Up) co-stars Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows and Maya Rudolph and many of the biggest names in comedy and music in cameo performances. Co-directed by Schaffer and Taccone and written by The Lonely Island trio, the film is also produced by Rodney Rothman (producer of Get Him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall; co-writer of 22 Jump Street), as well as Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone.
Though not a box office success, only grossing a little over $9 million at the box office on a $20 million budget, the film earned positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, amassing a large cult following, with the sing-along screenings arriving in time for Shout Factory‘s special steelbook re-release, which is hitting shelves in November![Gallery not found]
