Haley Lu Richardson & Barbie Ferreira to Star in HBO Max’s UNpregnant

HBO Max has announced that they’re in the process of developing a film adaptation of UNpregnant, based on authors Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan’s coming-of-age novel. Five Feet Apart actress Haley Lu Richardson and Euphoria star Barbie Ferreira have been tapped for the lead roles of Veronica and Bailey, respectively.

“When the opportunity to produce a film based on UNpregnant arose in partnership with the incomparable Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Erik Feig, I knew HBO Max was the right place for this story,” HBO Max’s Head of Content, Sarah Aubrey said in a statement. “We want to create authentic, relevant films that are told with grace and humor to serve our young adult audience, and this is exactly that.”

UNpregnant will follow the story of seventeen-year-old Veronica (Haley Lu Richardson), who never thought she’d want to fail a test – that is, until she finds herself staring at a piece of plastic with two solid pink lines. With a promising college-bound future now disappearing before her eyes, Veronica considers a decision she never imagined she’d have to make. This tough and never-taken-lightly decision leads her on a 900+ mile road trip to New Mexico over three days with her ex-best friend Bailey (Barbie Ferreira), where they discover that one of the most important factors in your life is who your friends are.

The film will be directed by Emmy winner Rachel Lee Goldenberg (The Mindy Project). It will feature a mix of humor and grounded human emotion as it explores complicated friendships and the difficult road to adulthood, all while in a stolen El Camino.

UNpregnant will be produced by Berlanti Productions in partnership with PICTURESTART. Berlanti’s Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon; Arrow), Sarah Schechter (Supergirl) and Michael McGrath will be serving as executive producers along with PICTURESTART’s Erik Feig (La La Land), Lucy Kitada (The Babysitters Club) and Jessica Switch (Nerve).
