It has been 24 years since the theatrical release of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s action thriller film Sudden Death, and now Universal 1140 has officially announced that they are producing a reboot of the 1995 film which will be titled Welcome to Sudden Death with comedic actor Gary Owen (Get Hard) and martial artist/actor Michael Jai White (Tyson) attached to star. The remake will making its debut on June 2020, exclusively on Netflix.

Welcome to Sudden Death will be directed and written by Dallas Jackson,  best known for directing Blumhouse’s 2019 slasher film Thriller. The reboot will have a comedic twist to it, a departure from the original.

“I’m such a huge fan of martial-arts films I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to reboot this cult classic with Universal 1440,” Jackson said on a statement. “Michael Jai White and Gary Owen are both at the top of their game right now and an on-screen dream team. We’re having a blast making this movie and putting a twist on the buddy-action genre. I can’t wait for the world to see what we’re cooking!”

The film will be produced by Universal 1140’s Griff First with VP Share Stallings set to oversee for the division. Production is scheduled to start this week in Winnipeg, Canada.

Sudden Death was directed by Peter Hyams which followed the story of a fireman who tries to save his daughter and the U.S. Vice President, who were taken hostages by a group of terrorists. The film starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Powers Boothe.
