It was previously reported that the movie would follow a group of stranded school girls, flipping the script on the original source material that follows a group of school boys who become stranded on a deserted island and descend into a savage social order. The outlet notes that plans to have a female-led version of the story has been scrapped and the project will actually follow a group of school boys.

Known Universe is in talks to executive produce the project. Peter Dodd will oversee for the studio. If deals close, Guadagnino and the production company plan to “develop a story that stays true to the text but with a contemporary, ultra-kinetic feel.”
