Sherlock Holmes 3 lands Rocketman director

Sherlock Holmes 3 Lands Rocketman Director Dexter Fletcher

The long-delayed Sherlock Holmes 3 is finally starting to come together. Dexter Fletcher, who just helmed the critically acclaimed Elton John biopic Rocketman, will direct the third installment, per Variety.

Fletcher takes over the franchise from director Guy Ritchie, who directed the first two films, Sherlock Holmes in 2009, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2011. Robert Downey Jr. will be back reprising the role of the world’s best detective as well. Apparently, he was tied up playing Iron Man in various MCU entries in recent years, which prevented the franchise from moving forward. Jude Law, who hasn’t been busy playing Iron Man, is also expected to return as Watson.

The film is currently eyeing a Dec. 21, 2021 premiere date. The script comes from Chris Brancato, while Susan Downey, Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram are producing. The studio was originally hoping for a Dec. 2020 premiere date, but had to push that back a full year.

In addition to Rocketman, Fletcher took over production of Bohemian Rhapsody after the film’s original director, Bryan Singer, was fired partway through production.
