Fast & Furious 9 Adds Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren As Returning Cast
The cast for the upcoming Fast & Furious 9 has added two familiar faces. Both Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren will be returning for the ninth installment of the car-centric franchise as the cyberterrorist Cipher and Magdalene Shaw, respectively.
Both actors made their debut appearances in The Fate of the Furious back in 2017. And, as has become a tradition with Fast & Furious 9 casting announcements, Vin Diesel took to Instagram to welcome their returns (h/t Vital Thrills).
“We’ve got a lot of the original cast here,” Diesel began. “Including Oscar winners like Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren, a few new surprises, including John Cena, who, I think, completely shines in this movie.”
Theron recently made headlines as her character was discussed as the center for another possible series spinoff, one that would focus on the female characters from the long-running film series.
Fast & Furious 9 was originally set to hit theaters on April 19 but was pushed back a year to make room for the first spin-off in the series, Hobbs & Shaw, which is now scheduled to hit theaters on August 2. As a result, Fast & Furious 9 will be getting a May 2020 release with Justin Lin returning to directing in the franchise, after helming Fast & Furious parts 3 through 6. Dan Casey will pen the screenplay based on Lin’s story.
Fast & Furious 9 stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Nathalie Emmanuel, Lucas Black, Tyrese Gibson, and Ludacris. While the upcoming ninth film in the franchise won’t feature Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, as he’s busy with the first spinoff, Hobbs & Shaw, as Diesel himself pointed out, this one will feature John Cena. Production on Fast & Furious 9 is currently underway and is due out in theaters on May 22, 2020.
