Transparent Creator Joey Soloway to Write & Direct Red Sonja Film

Emmy winner Joey Soloway, the creator of Amazon Prime’s Transparent series, will be writing and directing the Red Sonja film for Millennium Films, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Soloway, whose writing and directing credits also include United States of Tara, Six Feet Under, Afternoon Delight, and I Love Dick, will replace Bryan Singer, who was originally set to direct the movie but was dropped from the project in March. It was previously reported that Singer was dropped from the project, not because of reports of him sexually assaulting underaged boys, but because the production company couldn’t secure a distributor in the US with Singer involved.

Red Sonja was created by Robert E. Howard, writer Roy Thomas, and artist Barry Windsor Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973. The Red Sonja comics are still being published today through Dynamite Entertainment. The film was put into fast-track development by Avi Lerner after the success of Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman.

A feature film of Red Sonja was announced by Robert Rodriguez eleven years ago with Rose McGowan set to take on the titular role. Years later Simon West was attached to a version of the film with Amber Heard in talks to star. Neither version ever got off the ground.
