Chris Hemsworth Fought to Keep Fat Thor Throughout Avengers: Endgame

Chris Hemsworth had to fight to keep fat Thor throughout Avengers: Endgame

One of the more surprising aspects of Avengers: Endgame was Thor’s transformation from muscular behemoth to, as one of the character’s in the film put it, “melted ice cream” — a result of his mental breakdown after his failure to take down Thanos. Even more surprising is that actor Chris Hemsworth had to fight to keep Thor in this new Lebowski-esque situation throughout the duration of the film.

“I enjoyed that version of Thor,” Hemsworth told Variety (via JoBlo). “It was so different than any other way I played the character. And then it took on a life of its own.”

The actor explained the original plan, as outlined in the script, was to have Thor revert back to his normal muscular self, but Hemsworth felt that would cheapen “Fat Thor,” stating, “We didn’t go, like, ‘Let’s chunk him up, it’ll be hilarious.’ And we leave him in that state at the end of the movie. Even though he’s emotionally resolved … We fix his problem, and it’s not his weight. I know some people are sensitive about some of the humor that comes from it, which I understand. But our issue that we wanted him to deal with was his emotional state that his mom addresses. And I think he is the ideal Thor at the end of the movie, and he’s carrying some weight.”

Thor’s resolution at Avengers: Endgame’s finale is one of the more intriguing character beats we can expect to explore once Marvel kicks off its next phase. Who knows where this character will end up?

Last year’s Avengers: Infinity War saw the titular superhero team take the fight to Thanos in order to stop his attempt at exterminating half of the universe’s population with the Infinity stones. But it was to no avail, as he was able to successfully collect them all and snap his fingers, wiping out half of all life from existence in a cloud of ash.

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Sean Gunn, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Katherine Langford and Josh Brolin.
