Sonic the Hedgehog Delayed Until 2020

After an avalanche of negative fan feedback for the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer, director Jeff Fowler announced that the design for Sonic would be altered for the final movie. Now it turns out that revamp is going to involve three extra months of work, with Fowler taking to Twitter to announce that the film has moved from November 8, 2019 to a February 14, 2020 release date. “Taking a little more time to make Sonic just right,” Fowler wrote.

The Valentine’s Day slot has the video game adaptation going head-to-head with the untitled prequel formerly titled Kingsman: The Great Game and the romantic comedy The Photograph. Since one of those is an R-rated action pic and the other a rom-com, the date could prove perfect counter-programming.

Fowler previously stated of the redesign: “Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be… #sonicmovie #gottafixfast”

The cast for Sonic the Hedgehog includes Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik/Eggman, Sonic’s villainous rival; James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, a police officer who teams up with Sonic to thwart Eggman’s evil schemes; Adam Pally (The Mindy Project, Iron Man 3) as Tom’s fellow police officer; Tika Sumpter and Natasha Rothwell. Neal McDonough (Captain America: The First Avenger), Sumpter and Rothwell’s roles are currently under wraps. Ben Schwartz provides the voice for Sonic in the film.
