How John Wick: Chapter 3 Sets Up the First John Wick Spin-Off

Potential spoilers for John Wick 3 ahead!

Nearly two years ago, just after the release of John Wick: Chapter 2, it was revealed Lionsgate was planning on expanding the world of that film series into other movies. The first of these was a film titled Ballerina, a movie that would be set in the world of John Wick and follow a female assassin looking for revenge against those that killed her family.

During John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Wick seeks refuge at the hands of those that trained him, a coalition of Russian mobsters lead by Anjelica Huston’s The Director. While there, we see a ballerina performing a solo in front of Huston’s character, which seems innocuous at first, until we see that she has the same style of tattoos on her back and arms that John Wick himself does. As the scene moves on we learn this is where John Wick was “made” and that the training that turned him into “The Baba Yaga” (itself a figure of Russian folklore) was here. Plus, there are a ton of young ballerinas at the school who are all seemingly being trained for a life of killing, one of them could lead her own movie.

This sequence has two places in the world of John Wick, it offers the audience a history lesson in where they favorite killer came from and it opens the door for a movie within this world about someone else that was trained here. Plus, original Ballerina scribe Shay Hatten has seemingly been brought into the John Wick family for real, as he’s one of the four credited screenwriters on Chapter 3.
