James Cameron Congratulates Avengers: Endgame on Besting Titanic

James Cameron has congratulated Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios on Avengers: Endgame about becoming the second highest-grossing film of all time, beating out his 1997 epic, Titanic. The director took to Twitter to offer his praise, complete with a photoshopped image of the Avengers logo sinking the doomed ocean liner.

“An iceberg sank the real Titanic. It took The Avengers to sink my Titanic,” the caption began. “Everyone here at Lightstorm Entertainment salutes your amazing achievement. You’ve shown that the movie industry is not only alive and well, it’s bigger than ever!

Cameron, however, still holds the record for the biggest box office gross of all time, thanks to 2009’s sci-fi adventure Avatar. Meanwhile, Avengers: Endgame is still steadily gaining ground for the top spot, so he might be sending out another tweet in the near future. However, Cameron could be back in the running when the first of his four Avatar sequels opens in theaters in 2021, though that all remains to be seen.

Endgame is the follow-up to last year’s Avengers: Infinity Warwhich saw the titular superhero team take the fight to Thanos in order to stop his attempt at exterminating half of the universe’s population with the Infinity Stones. But it was to no avail, as he was able to successfully collect them all and snap his fingers, wiping out half of all life from existence in a cloud of ash. The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films.

Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Sean Gunn, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan and Josh Brolin as Thanos.

The epic, three-hour final showdown between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the Mad Titan himself is in theaters now.
