Shazam Says the Magic Word, Opens to #1 at the Box Office

Warner Bros. and New Line’s Shazam! opened at the #1 spot at the domestic box office, bringing in $53.45 million, exceeding estimations and gaining an A Cinemascore. Internationally the film brought in $102 million for a worldwide opening of $158.7 million. The film has the lowest domestic opening for a DCEU film, but also a markedly lower budget than the likes of Aquaman and Justice League, meaning that the film won’t need to hit the $1 billion mark to be in the green.

Paramount’s Pet Sematary reboot landed at the #2 spot at the domestic box office, bringing in $25 million in the US and $17.3 million internationally for a global debut of $42.3 million. Things are looking up for the latest Stephen King adaptation, made on a budget of $21 million, which has the second highest opening for a King-based movie (WB’s IT remains the top with $123.4 million).

Walt Disney Pictures‘s Dumbo fell to third place for the weekend with $18.2 million. Dumbo has brought in $76.2 million domestically and another $137.5 million internationally for a worldwide haul of $213.77 million. The live-action remake stars Danny DeVito, Colin Farrell, Nico Parker, Finley Hobbins, with Michael Keaton, and Eva Green.

Filmmaker Jordan Peele’s sophomore effort Us fell to fourth place, dropping 58.4% with an estimated $13.8 million haul. The film has now brought in $152 million domestically and another $64.3 million internationally for a worldwide total of $216.59 million.

Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures’ Captain Marvel fell to fifth place, adding another $12.68 million for a US total of $374 million. Internationally the film brought in $14.1 million, giving it an international total of $663.5 million and a global total of $1.038 billion.The film is remains the 7th highest grossing movie in the MCU worldwide.
